Anatomy of an Antique Microscope — Visual Identification

Eight parts. One instrument. Better buying questions.

EIGHT FEATURES TO RECOGNIZE

Read the instrument before reading the listing

Select each part to learn what it does and what a serious collector should inspect. The plate is an original illustrative reconstruction, not a documented example of one specific maker or model.

Never date an instrument from one feature alone

Brass construction, a tripod foot or a maker-style engraving can suggest a period, but replacements, reproductions, restorations and mixed accessory sets are common. Compare a full set of photographs with properly cataloged examples and period manufacturer literature. A museum object is a comparison, not a certification for someone else's eBay listing.
